Which Brisbane suburbs to live in?

We gets lots of questions about where the best place/best suburb is to live in Brisbane. If anyone has first-hand information on living in a particular Brisbane suburb, we’d love to hear from you...and for those thinking of moving to Brisbane, this is the place to ask all of those questions about where to live in Brisbane.

My top three:
Having left my mark on Brisbane to move south a few years ago there are definitely three suburbs that stand out for me as being among the best to live in.
1.
Paddington
- convenient, 15-minute drive to the CBD, yet suburban, leafy and vibrant in feel. It's quite hilly which I also love, affording some beautiful aspects of Mt Cooth-tha and the city skyline. There's a Woolworths and shopping centre for the necessities but also one of my favourite coffee hang-outs of all time, Sassafras.
2.
New Farm
- inner city, fast-paced and everything 'urban chic' about Brisbane is in New Farm or neighbouring Fortitude Valley - coffee, fashion and culture. Nestled down Brunswick Street, bordered by the river bend, I lived for three very exciting years in New Farm. Public transport is regular and easy - and recommended over driving (in and out of the city traffic is not so cool!).
3.
West End
- up-and-coming, once was drab but now I shine is West End. Akin to a care-free, let it all hang out lifestyle, you won't see BMWs or tweed slacks, more like afros and fisherman pants but there is such a positive, endearing vibe about living in West End. Locally, there's everything you need and again, it's along the Brisbane River with some lovely parks and trails.
In addition, I also think it’s worth checking out Ashgrove, Yeronga, Fairfield and Chapel Hill. They’re a bit further out of the CBD but close enough to the happening hubs and local conveniences.

The southside suburbs like Mt Gravatt, Holland Park, Wishart and even further out like Springwoord and Daisy Hill are good because you are nearly at the Gold Coast.
They have good facilities like schools and shopping and transport into Brisbane if you have to commute isn't all that bad.
Once it gets to the weekend though, you're set with just a quick run down the freeway to the coast.

Well as you have probably guessed from the website, Heidi and I live in the Western suburbs of Brisbane. Maybe it's inner-West here at Toowong. It's about 5 kilometres from the City and is a bit of a transport hub, which means it's a well serviced by train and bus, but it's also pretty easy to get on the freeways heading West and North (via Coronation Drive admittedly and the city).
It's a pretty young area and I was reading that in the Federal electorate something like 60 per cent of the population are students. It's a well established area though and was settled pre-war. As you move further West you get into newer developed areas.
Anyway, we love it because it's so easy to walk to shops, cafe's restaurants and bars. That's not so common in Brisbane. Mostly its a long taxi ride if you plan to go even to your local pub, which takes a lot of the fun out of it in my opinion.
There are other places you can walk to bars and cafe's, of course, but Toowong has the immortal Royal Exchange Hotel where I mis-spent my youth, so it kind of feels like home.

My pick ?
I like the suburbs from Chapel Hill through to Brookfield. This is in the western suburbs of brizzy - very green, leafy and on the slightly sophisticated side, Brookfield tends to be a bit horsey but there's plenty of green space around. I personally like Chapel Hill - it's close enough to the city and the houses there are that architecturally designed late 1960s style, many built on the edge of escarpments around the Mt Cootha area with fab views. You're close to everything you need but you'll need a car unless you want to take your chance on buses.

Hi Puppet
Archerfield is probably your best bet for flight training. You might also want to consider Redcliffe:

;

or even Boonah - though this is further away from Brisbane CBD:
www.airsportqld.com.au
Archerfield is really more of an industrial area and is approximately half an hour's drive south of Brisbane CBD, near Sunnybank.
I hope this helps and good luck!
