Hi Blinko,

I'm pleased to hear you will be soon joining us in Brisbane. I'm sure you will love it here.

Umm, I think you might want to factor in a car for your finances, though it really depends on what sort of lifestyle you have planned. Sorry you don't give much info in your posting, so I'm not sure if you have a family or whether you are planning on living in the city where all the action is ;o)

Brisbane is a really big place. The population is only about a million people, but Brisbane is really spread out. So unless you plan to live and work in the city, a car is really handy. The public transport is pretty good, but not great. There is a rail network, but a lot of areas aren't served by that. There's also buses which reach every part of the city. So you can certainly get by without a car if you prefer. We also have RiverCat's (ferries) so if you live in one of the high density areas near the river that's an option as well.

Car prices are reasonable and the Government subsidises the petrol here so, that cost is lower than you would find in other Australian capitals.

If you can give me more information I can probably advise you better.

Yes. You should get a car if you plan to live in Brisbane. If you work in the CBD, the public transport is not so great if you live away from the train lines. Trains are efficient tho. I never trust buses - they're too reliant of traffic and the traffic in Brisbane is unpredictable at any time of day. Brisbane covers alot of ground so a car is a must if you want to make the most of your time here.

In terms of cost, it really depends on what you want to spend. Just make sure you get a car with aircon. Petrol here is only a little bit cheaper than interstate. No savings there!

I hope this helps! Smiley

Did anybody mention that Brisbane has lots of really good bikeways?

You could help save the environment by using public transport and cycling. It will help keep you fit too.

hey brisybound
cycling is okay in winter, but I reckon you have to be pretty keen to ride anywhere serious in the summer months, not only are you likely to get rained on now the drought has broken, but you are probably going to want a shower when you get ther.

Too right! It's a great way to lose weight tho  Wink
I love the environment and all that but let's be honest, you NEED a car in Brisbane - the public transport is trying at the best of times - especially on buses which rely on roads which get clogged and jammed. Every morning I notice cars with just one person in them, commuting to work. So if you can't beat 'em, join 'm I say!
