The warm climate and outdoor beer garden culture is the signature of pub life in Brisbane. Some of the best drinking holes and meeting places are in the inner suburbs and attract diversity in local flavour and urban style.

Some of the precincts to check out are:

West End
Start at The Fox Hotel (old Terminus building) on Grey Street, recently renovated with a new rooftop function space affording fabulous view of the city. Meander down Melbourne Street towards Coles and spattered up Boundary Road are some great bars and pubs. My picks: Rumpus Room for a low-key hang, The Lychee Lounge for Friday night cocktails, or for a game of pool The Pavilion across the road.

Fortitude Valley
Brunswick Street is arguably one of the most popular destinations for locals, but head down Brunswick Street towards New Farm for a different experience. Littered along the street are several bars, restaurants and pubs ranging from relaxed beer on tap to side platters with top shelf chardonnay. If the beat of the mall is too fast, then try this funky strip. Top spots are Gerties and The Alibi Room.

New Farm
Charming and sophisticated, the area along Merthyr Road and down towards the river is very different to the valley mall up the road. Merthyr bowls club on Oxlade Drive is the perfect Sunday afternoon beer retreat. Head down toward the Brisbane Powerhouse for a glass of wine at Watt.

Toowong
Quintessentially Queensland is no better represented in Brisbane than it is in Toowong. Two of the most popular beer gardens in Brisbane are the Regatta on Coronation Drive and the RE just around the corner on Taringa Road. There’s no better way than to enjoy a refreshing weekend pint than amongst the majority of the student population from nearby Uni of Qld.

Brisbane CBD
The city nightlife is not as vibrant as the inner suburbs however there are some great spots for Friday night drinks with work colleagues. The Port Office, Victory Hotel and Fridays have been long-standing pub favourites but for something a little different, try Verve, downstairs at the Metro Arts Building for a quite drink and live comedy and music acts.

Other great beer garden pubs are the Normanby Hotel (Norms), Hamilton Hotel (Hammo), Plough Inn, Paddington Hotel (Paddo) and the Newmarket Hotel.

Speaking of good watering holes. You can't go past the Breakie Creek (Breakfast Creek Hotel).

It has a nice beer garden and pretty good food. In fact a steak at the Breakie Creek is one of the iconic Brisbane Sunday's I reckon.

It's on the way to the city from the airport and should be the first/last place you go when flying (but not driving ;o)
